Alcohol and ED Medication: What the Labels Actually Say
It is one of the most common questions about ED medication. The answer depends on how much.
Men's Health Weekly staff ·
The quick answer
- The tadalafil label warns that heavy drinking with a PDE5 inhibitor can cause dizziness, low blood pressure or fainting.1
- Both alcohol and PDE5 inhibitors can lower blood pressure.2,1
- Heavy drinking is itself a cause of ED.3
- A clinician can advise what is safe with your specific health and medications.
A glass of wine with dinner and a planned evening often go together, so it is no surprise that alcohol is one of the most-asked questions about ED medication. Here is what the prescribing information says.
What the labels say
PDE5 inhibitors widen blood vessels and can lower blood pressure slightly.2 Alcohol does the same. The tadalafil label warns that drinking substantial amounts of alcohol, which it describes as five units or more, while taking tadalafil can increase the chance of dizziness, a fast heartbeat, low blood pressure or fainting.1
Moderate vs heavy
The label's concern is heavy drinking, not a single drink. Even so, how alcohol affects you depends on your blood pressure, other medications and body size, so ask the prescribing clinician rather than assuming.
Alcohol works against the goal
There is also a more basic problem. Heavy drinking is one of the recognized causes of ED.3 A medication cannot fully offset the effect of a lot of alcohol on arousal and erections.
Combination medications
Some compounded ED products combine PDE5 inhibitors with apomorphine, whose most common side effect is nausea,4 which alcohol can make worse. Ask the clinician specifically about alcohol if you are prescribed a combination.
The bottom line
Moderate drinking is a question to put to your clinician; heavy drinking alongside ED medication is what the label warns against.
